So Don and I headed south to thaw out. We've found ourselves in Arenal area of Costa Rica. We are way up in the mountains, so high that we are in the clouds often. It's not hot, not cold and we know why it's called the rain forest.
The views are amazing and we've identified almost 30 species of birds, seem more but have no idea what they were!
Costa Rica is far different than I expected. I've been to the next two countries north-Nicaragua and Honduras-and I am pleasantly surprised. The infrastructure is much better here, with public water, decent roads and consistent electricity on real utility poles. There is municipal water-so you can actually drink it! Very clean, no trash blowing around, streets are imaculate in the little towns we went through. The locals are just pleasant and happy, which is nice for visitors on vacation!
So we'll be leaving in a few to go hike the Arenal Volcano. It was thought to be a dormant volcano since the last activity was in the 1500's. Then suddenly in 1968 the volcano woke up suddenly from it's sleep. Buried a few towns and killed many people. Today it is observed and monitored very closely!
Enjoy our images while we go have more fun!
